LIBRARIES TO TAKE THE PULSE BOOK FAIR MADRID

We just three fair days, and although it seems premature to predict results, we dare to diagnose the LWF has "high blood pressure." Shuffle here some conjectures and hypothesis after the pulse, obviously after having talked, at length, with many publishers and booksellers in the typical "bareto 'Fair (by the way, prices go, lemon granita 3 euros, 2 reeds , 40 ... so they say that the deflated prices):

1. The LWF is a huge cash register: publishers, distributors and booksellers these days show an excessive desire-and legitimate-to sell, but in this show are missing more and better organized cultural activities.

2. The first data from three days of work, pointing Similar to sales, or something slightly lower than last year.

3. It is noted that the public chooses books in lower price ranges to 20-25 euros, and often buy a single book. The percentage of people that buy 2 or 3 books in the same house is much lower than last year.

4. The average purchase per customer and operation will be lower than last year. People count the pennies in his pocket that before deciding to buy.

5. Maintain a turnover similar to last year require public traffic to the fair is higher.

Lacking LWF and other powerful sponsors, who injected liquidity into the advertising budget, the only thing that seems to cause traffic visitor / buyer is the tremendous noise that the media itself has generated FLM inclusion of e-book on this issue. Do not forget, however, that the public address book (if you know what it is) or you will not you come, and also no longer is a key issue for publishers and booksellers.

This does not mean that both (booksellers and publishers) should not go position on the matter, and that would have been an opportunity to sign on to both the LWF responsible if they led the assembly of a facility to collect, for example, a sample of new media, at least a curiosity, and organizers had to encourage reading of books, paper-a call for public reading, on a pedagogical holiday. But then, here's all business, just business. And divide, booksellers and publishers, it is difficult to imagine and do things together that flow back to the fair to keep it as a cultural event of international fame.

Like years ago this same fair had a tent devoted to electronic products, we believe that in future years to pay close attention to new media, but this year there is no demand or market pressure. Another issue is that there are media groups, consulting firms, and other gurus of various idiosyncrasies interested in generating expectations and break into the market intensively. But make no mistake, as the minimum necessary conditions exist and this smacks of business, the fair would not be insensitive to the issue.

SEMPO, GUEST OF HONOR OF THE MADRID BOOK FAIR BOOK FAIR

are just a few hours to be formally inaugurated the 68th edition of the Madrid Book Fair in the Retiro Park. This morning we were all racing from one place to another of workers, carpenters, locksmiths and house painters. Also we were in the methodical slaughter booksellers, publishers and ... walkers busy wondering when the fair opens.
But they did not know each other is that the fair this year is special. And not because the guest of honor was French literature, but because the show this year has a name: Sempé.
Between case and box have the pleasure of meeting a good friend of the Fair, Isabel Rosell, CEO Archives, Museums and Libraries of CAM, and part of his magnificent team, among others, Mary Jáudenes, Deputy Director General Library that as more have come today to work and put your two cents for it, once again, is the best show possible.
And we have made a gift: a beautiful brochure / poster that realize the most striking aesthetic event of the show: the Exhibition Jean-Jacque Sempé : original work, an exhibition that, in the words of Commissioner, Elena Vergara, " presents his solo work from the 60's to present, in more than seventy original works belonging to some of his works published in monographs and albums in the U.S. satirical magazine The New Yorker."
The show, from Martine Gossieaux Gallery in Paris, arrived in Madrid in the year that marks the 50 anniversary of Nicholas Little , the character created by writer Sempé and René Goscinny, which is one of the great characters of children's readings of several generations of children. Lovers of illustration, and children who enjoy Sempé readings, we discover now or we will be reunited with the drawings of a genius of illustration and "a master of irony."
Congratulations to the Ministry of Culture CAM for its original and exquisite initiative. Do not forget to visit, is an experience.

WITHOUT CRUCIBLE IS LESS THE FAIR

Book Fair opens this Friday. Today started the assembly, but this year the event will miss a very special library. Yesterday we witnessed the delivery of Premio Alfaguara de Novela 2009 at the headquarters of Grupo Santillana. The appointment could not be more joyous, occasion to reunite friends, enjoy the speech of the winner have a chance to play famous (high percentage of people from the film, perhaps because you were the Minister González-Sinde) and a cocktail of level ( although beer was no Mahou Cinco Estrellas, and that supporting the English cinema).

ham and beer in the sun are due to annoy someone who another, in strict silence, a peaceful rally, more than fifty workers demonstrated Crucible on the doorstep of soiree, so that, by its silence, make the colors to the lords of PRISA. In solidarity with them, we reproduce here the statement that drew workers Crucible for the Media:

"A little over three weeks was reported in various media by the ERE which takes closing out the libraries Crucible. The story, apart from the different approaches that each medium was applied, was mainly fed by the flow of information from the company ie, a unidirectional flow. We consider in this connection that the information becomes skewed and we miss the point of view of workers. Redress the information gap is the main objective of this paper.

"First we would like to highlight one aspect that seems important. From years ago are adopting a series of decisions by the heads of company leaders have weakened the quality of the libraries offer and have reduced their ability to compete with other establishments in the same sector. Given these misguided actions, proposals were raised by workers aimed at optimizing the performance of libraries. Some proposals disregarded repeatedly. Instead, these policies have been misguided actions heightened considerably in recent months, so that it can be said that the company has been left to die, literally, to bookstores crucible gradually.

"do not know if the negligence or lack of interest have led to managers when adopting the above policy failures (although in the light of recent events would have been a question whether intentionally misguided decisions) right is that over time and despite the efforts of the employees of Crucible, the company has been increasingly dying to leave what had become be a reference for libraries in Madrid's literary landscape. And the latter is attested by the large number of samples of indignation on one side and supported by none other than the regulars of the establishments have given us through various means.

"Clearly, the company ignored all this. At this point, it should be clear that we do not intend here to criticize your decision to close: a company is free to close when he pleases, despite the obvious damage this may have on workers and the subsequent disagreement of the same. However, we would like to refine some things. Some of the arguments made by the company to justify closures are restricted to issues related to improving economic performance, falling consumption in the sector ... ultimately matters that refer to a certain economic infeasibility. But remember that just Santillana increased revenues in 2008.

"There is much to talk about it, but as just one example, this excerpt from the story that appeared on the website of the chain be dated 05.01.2009 referring to the profits of the group PRISA the past year speaks for itself: "the proceeds from the sale of books and training have increased by 10.7% to reach 153.69 million euros, compared to 138.81 million for the same period of 2008. " "Economic infeasibility? No.

"infeasibility advert are aimed in another direction, but rather are enrolled in redirecting the company to print their business. And this is legitimate. "Finally, just say that we put at the disposal of media if you want to contact us for additional or clarifying information, ideas and opinions reflected in this statement. Sincerely, workers Crucible. trabajadoreslibreriascrisol@yahoo.es.

So far the statement of the employees of Crucible.

Some have said loudly that the closure of the libraries Crisol has nothing to do with the economic crisis and the bursting editorial bubble, but rather with the financial problems of Grupo PRISA. Maybe they are right. What is certain is that when the library finally closed the building Aguilar, Juan Bravo, the Salamanca district lost one of its cultural referents symbolic. What will open later in the hall? A clothing store brand?

When closed, if not replaced in time by another, a library never recovered. Your customers will not be shared without other bookstores in the area. Do not lose as a library like that. STATEMENT OF THE ISSUE: THE DARK SIDE OF THE BOOK FAIR TRADE

The publishing industry does not hold water in Madrid. On the eve of the beginning of the 68 th Book Fair held in the Retiro, Manuel Rodriguez Rivero surprises at the last Babelia a analysis on the dark side of Fair, imagine that the information he has handled it has had to spend his "official mole." Rivero Martinez could not be more clear:

-The Fair offer each year is more homogeneous, or more of the same.

"The electronic book (whatever that is) is notably absent.

"The market is controlled by the Booksellers Guild, in conflict with some publishers for the title of it.

-accounts are not clear. Or at least not available.

"The motto of the fair-French literature has not any official representation.

All points are reasoned, but there are a few things that have their nuances and edges. The fair, in substance and in form, is probably better, in fact there are models that have managed to fair better integrate the new sensitivities, such as the Fair Seville Book , since that directs Javier Yañez ( bookseller Repiso Books) is a role model and copy.

But what is in the back of LWF is the personal engagement of many priests in the book industry and the institutions that some of them represent. The fair is therefore a war scenario, but not the central cause of the problems. Give to Caesar what is Caesar's. For example, Publishers Association of Madrid is at odds with booksellers, the fair itself and the Publishers' Federation. Almost nothing.

We believe that in future years in a settlement of these disagreements. But if the fighting corresponded to a body of analysis and different projects, would be a rich discussion and to be healthy. The problem is that it is not. And this is the group of editors of Madrid can not afford, especially in a scenario where even the booksellers already recognize sales fall 20% (see statements Pilar Gallego in the country this Saturday, 23 May) in a situation not seen any sign of recovery. Data for April and May will certainly be very bad.

The election in the CPE (Commission Small Publishers, what a name) of a new president of independent publishers opens a path of peace and wisdom in Madrid, but will you have room to maneuver inside the Guild of Madrid? Is it possible in this situation to launch and develop the ambitious program proposed in defending electoral independent publishing? We fear not. Time, as inexorable judge shall give and take away reasons.

MADRID ELECTRONIC BOOK: A BUSINESS TAKES OFF NOT

few days ago we read in the II Roundtable on Electronic Commerce organized by PriceMinister.es that "ecommerce in Spain is in its infancy." The causes that are envisaged to explain this impasse are numerous and varied:

· Market still little mature.
· very deep general contraction of consumption.
• Need for improvement and expansion of broadband.
· Service still poor.
· Logistics much improved.

point however is a couple of issues that interest us especially from the point of view of the book trade:

• In 2009, 87% of Internet users believe that the crisis will lead people to buy through Internet essentially by the wide range of prices it offers. Low cost society is polarizing the consumption habits of the English, but the low cost can not be transferred to the book, new catalog, due to the fixed price law. Not so the print book price and free. Let us recall the case of librosa5euros.com , which already had occasion to comment on an entry above, a paradigmatic example of the arrival of low cost the book sector.

• A 35% (compared with 8% last year) says that what most influences the purchase requirement are the comments on blogs and social networks. This item should illuminate the online marketing strategies of publishers when planning their launch of new campaigns and category management of the funds from their catalogs.

· The comments from friends and acquaintances are important for 40% of Internet users (compared to 54% last year). This information is critical for publishers, who should start paying attention to the "word of mouth" network. The wiki editor must, above all, listen, listen and listen to the Net As pointed out in the days Javier Celaya futures book, "The Network is a keeper: how long everything."

• Media communication only important for 11%. This data is critical and should help publishers to refocus its advertising spending in traditional media.

This leads us to think about selling books through the Internet. Just published the Report of the 6th Congress Publishers, held in Seville in June 2008. In one of the tables, dedicated to new technologies, collected the words of Jesus Bader, Director General of Libraries of Metro Group, with respect to electronic commerce in Spain. Bader offers the figure of 2% as sales volume through Internet (data, 2007). The figure seems more reasonable, sensible and has adjusted the Internal Trade Survey (which does not exceed 0.7%), we must remember that the survey data reflect only those provided by publishers, not bookstores or other outlets.

share Badenes Jesus' words when he says that "the book will continue long into the form we know today," and when he argues that "the book as entertainment and as a culture has a perfect supporting role." But also very timely considering his claim that "the Internet can serve to open new markets." The philosophy behind this statement should be part of any online marketing plan of the editors, since the e-commerce book in paper or digital content, will be crucial in the coming years.

electronic trade figures in the book seem, however, a reality too poor. Development (promotion and online marketing from publishers, and selling through online bookstores) perhaps could be an outlet for independent publishing, especially if we value the huge reduction in visibility that is going through traditional channels. The Network helps sell more books ... paper, and provides virtual visibility The editor should get in the physical sales outlet.

seems obvious that today a reader wants to get certain types of books, his only help is to use the internet. What then is the problem that prevents the sale of books off the Internet in Spain?
